  • Good morning! (desde las 7 a la 1 de la tarde)
  • Good afternoon!  (desde las 2 a las 6 de la tarde)
  • Good evening!  (desde las 7 a las 11 de la noche)
  • Good night!  (cuando te vas a la cama)
  • Hi! / Hello! / How’s it going?  (más informal)

AT THE AIRPORT:

You: I’d like to check in for my flight to Amsterdam please.

Person at the desk:  Of course, can I have your passport please?

You: Here you are.  Is the flight full? Could I move to a window seat?

Person: I’m afraid it is full. Are you checking in any luggage?

You: Yes, I have a carry-on bag and one suitcase to check in.

Person: Here is your boarding card and the gate is number 6. Have a good flight.

You: Thank you.

AT CUSTOMS: (LA ADUANA)

Customs officer: Are you travelling for business or pleasure? Are you travelling alone?

You: I’m travelling with some friends/family and we are on holiday.

Officer: How long are you planning to stay? Where are you staying?

You: I’m staying for one week in a hotel.

Officer: Thank you. here’s your passport. Enjoy your stay.

AT THE HOTEL:

You:  Hi! I have a reservation.

Receptionist: Hello. What name is it? Can I have your credit card please and can you fill in this form?

You: My name is ….. and here is my credit card and the form.

R: How long are you staying? Would you like breakfast included?

You: We’re staying for 4 nights and how much is the breakfast?

R: Breakfast is 12€ per person. Would you prefer two single beds or one double?

You: Two singles please and could we have a balcony and a sea view?

R: I’m afraid we have no balcony rooms left.  Here is your key. It’s on the third floor. Enjoy your stay.

You: Thank you. Is there a lift and what time does the dining room open?

R: The lift is next to the stairs and the lunch is from 12 to 2pm.

ASKING FOR DIRECTIONS ON THE STREET:

You: Excuse me. Can you tell me where the main square is please?

Person: Sorry. I’m not from here. / Yes, of course. It’s just down this street and on the right.

You: Thanks. Is it far?

P: No, about five minutes.

AT THE TOURIST INFORMATION OFFICE:

You: Can you recommend paces to see please? We are here for only two days.

Receptionist: Ok, here is a map and you could visit the museum and the cathedral and also walk in the park.

You: Can you recommend a good, not expensive restaurant to try the typical food?

R: Yes, this one. Can I make a reservation for you?

You: Yes please. And what is the best way to travel to  X? is it better by bus or train?

R: You could rent a car for a day or take the train. It takes about 2 hours. Enjoy your stay!

You: Thank you! We will!

Can you repeat that please? / Can you speak more slowly please? / Sorry, I don’t understand.”
