En tus clases de inglés en Cambridge House vas a aprender muchas cosas nuevas, tanto de vocabulario como habilidades lectoras, de escritura y de comprensión oral. Por ejemplo, hablar de cosas corrientes o útiles y, si podemos, reírnos un poco en el intento; después de todo se puede aprender y pasarlo bien a la vez ¿verdad?
Hoy vamos a ver como jugamos un poco con el idioma, usando frases idiomáticas (idioms) relacionadas con la comida. A ver cuántas conoces de las siguientes ☺
- the apple of my eye (el niño de sus ojos).
e.g. Her son is the apple of her eye. He can do no wrong. - bring home the bacon (traer el pan a casa).
e.g. The mother is the one who brings home the bacon. - cheesy (cursi).
e.g. That film was so cheesy. - Sells like hot cakes (se vende muy bien).
e.g. The new line of shoes is selling like hot cakes. - One smart cookie (una persona muy inteligente).
e.g. That girl is one smart cookie – she can do anything! - A hard nut to crack (difícil de convencer).
e.g. He’s a real hard nut to crack – he doesn’t like new ideas. - A bad egg (malo).
e.g. Don’t trust him – he’s a real bad egg. - In a nutshell (en pocas palabras).
e.g. So, that’s the story in a nutshell. - Have a sweet tooth (ser goloso).
e.g. I’ve got a real sweet tooth – I just love anything sweet. - The bread and butter (lo más rentable).
e.g. That’s the real bread and butter of the business. - Have your cake and eat it (tenerlo todo).
e.g. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. - To butter someone up (hacer la pelota a alguien).
e.g. Are you trying to butter me up? - It’s a flat as a pancake (muy plano).
- e.g. That cake hasn’t risen properly – it’s as flat as a pancake!
- To be the salt of the earth (ser my bueno).
e.g. She’s the salt of the earth –a really good person. - To be as cool as a cucumber (estar muy tranquilo).
e.g. He said it to me as a cool as a cucumber. - To go bananas (volverse loco).
e.g. he went bananas when he heard that! - Like two peas in a pod (ser idénticos).
e.g. The two sisters are like two peas in a pod - To be a piece of cake (muy fácil).
e.g. The homework was a piece of cake. - For peanuts (poco dinero).
e.g. I was working for peanuts - A lot on your plate (mucho trabajo).

Cuando las hayas usado varias veces, ya te sentirás más cómod@ para utilizarlas con frecuencia.
Incluso en las clases para preparar los exámenes de Cambridge (First B2, Advanced C1 o Proficiency C2) viene bien intentar usarlas en la parte oral para sonar mucho más fluido y con dominio del idioma.
